The Wixarikas or the “Huicholes” are a little group of indigenous people that are from Jalisco, Nayarit and parts of Durango and zacatecas. They call themselves Wixarikas. They talk in a language called huichol, this language belongs to a group of many mesoamerican laguages like the nahua.
Their geographic distribution is on the Sierra Madre Occidental in the state of Jalisco. In their religion they have many rituals, one of the more interesting is the consumption of the Peyote, Peyote is a small and spineless cactus (Lophophora williamsii ) that it’s native to southwestern Texas and through Mexico.
It’s well known for its psychoactive alkaloids, particularly mescalinem, this cactus has a long history of ritualistic and medicinal use by many indigenous americans incluiding, in this case the Huicholes. This cactus is abundant and many used by the Huicholes.
